First Reading
Jeremiah 26:11-16, 24
Jeremiah
26:11 The priests and prophets said to the princes and to all the people, “Sentence this man to death! He has prophesied against this city! You heard it with your own ears.”
26:12 Jeremiah said to the princes and all the people: “It was the LORD who sent me to prophesy against this house and city everything you have heard.
26:13 Now, therefore, reform your ways and your deeds; listen to the voice of the LORD your God, so that the LORD will have a change of heart regarding the evil he has spoken against you.
26:14 As for me, I am in your hands; do with me what is good and right in your eyes.
26:15 But you should certainly know that by putting me to death, you bring innocent blood on yourselves, on this city and its inhabitants. For in truth it was the LORD who sent me to you, to speak all these words for you to hear.”
26:16 Then the princes and all the people said to the priests and the prophets, “This man does not deserve a death sentence; it is in the name of the LORD, our God, that he speaks to us.”
26:24 But the hand of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, protected Jeremiah, so they did not hand him over to the people to be put to death.
Responsorial Psalm
Psalm 69:15-16, 30-31, 33-34
Psalms
69:15 Rescue me from the mire, and do not let me sink. Rescue me from those who hate me and from the watery depths.
69:16 Do not let the flood waters overwhelm me, nor the deep swallow me, nor the pit close its mouth over me.
69:30 V - But here I am miserable and in pain; let your saving help protect me, God,
69:31 That I may praise God’s name in song and glorify it with thanksgiving.
69:33 “See, you lowly ones, and be glad; you who seek God, take heart!
69:34 For the LORD hears the poor, and does not spurn those in bondage.

Gospel
Matthew 14:1-12
Matthew
14:1 Chapter 14 - Herod’s Opinion of Jesus. At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the reputation of Jesus
14:2 and said to his servants, “This man is John the Baptist. He has been raised from the dead; that is why mighty powers are at work in him.”
14:3 The Death of John the Baptist. Now Herod had arrested John, bound [him], and put him in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip,
14:4 for John had said to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.”
14:5 Although he wanted to kill him, he feared the people, for they regarded him as a prophet.
14:6 But at a birthday celebration for Herod, the daughter of Herodias performed a dance before the guests and delighted Herod
14:7 so much that he swore to give her whatever she might ask for.
14:8 Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.”
14:9 The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and the guests who were present, he ordered that it be given,
14:10 and he had John beheaded in the prison.
14:11 His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl, who took it to her mother.
14:12 His disciples came and took away the corpse and buried him; and they went and told Jesus. The Return of the Twelve and the Feeding of the Five Thousand.
Homily
Profession of Faith
maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the Only Begotten Son of God,
born of the Father before all ages.
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary,
and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate,
he suffered death and was buried,
and rose again on the third day
in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead
and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.
I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins
and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come.
Amen.
